This is a 4 1/2" replica of a Thai Khon ceremonial dance mask. The Khon dance tradition was imported to Thailand in the 10th century. It evolved from a Hindu religious ceremony into a morality play in Siamese royal courts, and has since enjoyed royal flavor. The cultural equivalent of Japan's kabuki, Khon used to be performed in importuned social functions such as funerals. Dancers dress in glittering costumes and perform carefully modulated acrobatic moves to classical Thai music. The exquisitely painted Khon masks are essential to conveying the characters and moods of a Khon performance. These replicas of those masks are also used as decorative objects, displayed in many homes and Thai restaurants and as objects of worship.
This one is hand made of paper mache. The "jewels" on it have been carefully placed and it is covered with gold leaf and hand painted. It comes on its own wooden stand and has a lucite box that covers it for display. It is easy to find these that are made of resin but rare to find such fine craftsmanship. It is a fine piece of art.
